Prof. Dr. Mirjana Mircevska
PhD. MIRJANA P. MIRCEVSKA is a regular professor at the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology. She was born in Podgorica, Republic of Montenegro in 1962. In 1989, she was elected a Junior assistant at the Institute of Ethnology. She graduated from the Institute of Ethnology at PMF, with prof. Dr. Milos Konstantinov, and did her postgraduate studies at the Department of Ethnology and Anthropology, Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Belgrade, where she did her postgraduate studies under the mentorship of Professor Dr. Petar Vlahovic, a leading Yugoslav ethnologists. In 1995 she received the award of "Borivoje Drobnjakovikj" for the best final thesis defended at the Department of Ethnology and Anthropology, at the University of Belgrade. She did her doctoral Degree in the field of ethnic identities ( "Verbal and non-verbal ethnic symbols in Gorna Reka"), under the mentorship of prof. Aneta Svetieva.
Her engagement in the teaching activities of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology is mainly in the field of Ethnology and Anthropology of European and Balkan peoples, national ethnology, field ethnology, urban ethnology and anthropology and anthropology of migration. Under her supervision graduated more than seventy students, four master`s degree and PhD candidate. Moreover, she has been in almost all commissions for Master`s and doctoral dissertations that are defended at the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology. Alongside the parent faculty, Mircevska, for number of years has been engaged in lecturing in the field of ethnology at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University, the Department of History (studies in librarianship and archiving) and the Academy of Music in Ethnomusicology. She is the head of the second cycle (master) studies at the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology and under her mentorship are two modules - Ethnology and Anthropology of Material Culture and Ethnologcal and Anthropologcal Identity, Ethnicity and ethnic processes. Until present, she has continuously participated in field studies, lectures, expert and scientific debates, seminars, conferences and congresses in the country and abroad (Austria, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey, Hungary, Croatia, Czech Republic ), and within the program CEEPUS she has done a study stay at the Department of Ethnology and Anthropology at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Ljubljana.
Her research interest is in the field of ethnic identities, ethnic symbols and identities of the limitrophic areas (Macedonian-Albanian border zone), as well as topics of material culture, small ethnic and cultural communities, urban ethnology and anthropology. Lately her special interest is of ethnological and anthropological topics from the period of the socialism and postsocialism. As an independent author she has published 47 scientific works, including 15 in foreign journals and is the author of a monograph. She is the reviewer of 12 books and monographs, professional editor of several translated books. She has participated in 15 projects, 4 of which are bilateral and one with participants from many countries, supervising for of them 4 of them. Alongside with this activities, she is a member of the editorial board of the journal Ethnology and EthnoAnthropoZoom member of the Elaborate Commission for valorisation of collections of cultural heritage at the Ministry of Culture - Directorate for Protection of Cultural Heritage, and member of the peer review committee for new choreographies in the National ensemble of folk songs and dances - Tancec.
Mirjana P. Mircevska was the president of the Macedonian Ethnological Society in two mandates, the Head of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, also two-term member of the University Senate of the University "Ss. Cyril and Methodius "in the period 2010-2016.
